Who we are

Advancing rights. Strengthening civic action. Building inclusive futures.

The Open Knowledge Development Initiative (OKDI) is a youth-led nonprofit organisation working to advance human rights, strengthen civic participation and build more inclusive and accountable societies.

Our journey began in 2020 through youth mentoring, creative development and capacity-building activities. As our work grew, so did our understanding of the interconnected challenges facing young people and communities — from limited access to knowledge and opportunities to shrinking civic space, gender inequality, digital threats, exclusion and weak opportunities for meaningful participation in public life.

In 2023, OKDI was formally registered as a nonprofit organisation in Nigeria, creating a stronger institutional foundation for this growing work.

Today, we work at the intersection of human rights, democracy, technology and community action. We combine grassroots engagement, research, advocacy, capacity building and public-interest innovation to strengthen people and the systems that affect their lives.

Our work is rooted in Nigeria, with a strong presence in Northeast Nigeria and growing engagement across Africa.

How We Work

Communities are partners in change

We believe sustainable change happens when communities are not simply beneficiaries but active participants in identifying challenges and shaping solutions.

Our approach combines Research, Advocacy, Capacity Building, Community Engagement and Innovation.

We work directly with communities and civic actors, collaborate with institutions and partners, generate evidence, strengthen skills and systems, advocate for policy and institutional change, and develop practical resources and technologies that respond to real-world challenges.

Across our programmes, we prioritise approaches that are participatory, inclusive, evidence-driven, locally grounded and rights-based.

Our Journey

From youth mentoring to civic innovation

What began as a youth mentoring and capacity-building platform has evolved into a growing civic and human rights organisation.

From creative-writing and digital-literacy programmes in our early years, OKDI expanded into civic-space advocacy, gender equality and safer schools, peacebuilding, digital rights and security, grassroots human-rights engagement, climate mobility, governance and civic technology.

Our work has included initiatives such as Advocacy and Empowerment for Civic Space in Nigeria, AmplifyHer for Safer Schools, Digital Rights Defenders Lab, Voices of Peace Fellowship, Human Rights Village Assembly, and Digital Resilience and Protection for Civic Actors in Northeast Nigeria.

As technology increasingly shapes rights and democracy, we have also established the AI Rights Lab to deepen our work at the intersection of artificial intelligence, human rights and public-interest technology.

Partnerships

Collaboration for lasting impact

We recognise that the challenges facing communities cannot be addressed by one organisation alone.

OKDI works with civil society organisations, communities, government institutions, development partners, researchers, technologists, media, traditional institutions and youth networks to combine knowledge, resources and experience.

Our Commitment

Building the organisation we advocate for

We are committed to building an organisation that reflects the principles we advocate for: accountability, inclusion, dignity, participation, learning, open knowledge and responsible innovation.

As OKDI continues to grow, our ambition is not simply to implement more projects. It is to build lasting systems, knowledge, tools and partnerships that enable communities and civic actors to exercise their rights, influence decisions and respond to emerging challenges.

We advance rights. We strengthen civic action. We build inclusive futures.
